Why a fixed plan isn't enough

Most taper plans are a table you print once. Real tapers don't stay on the table.

A taper chart works until the first hard week. You hold at a dose for a while, and every date after it is wrong. You and your prescriber slow things down, and you're back to doing the math by hand. Then it's prescription time, and you're counting halves and quarters of tablets on the kitchen table.

Prescription requests, worked out for you

Pick how many days the prescription covers, from 1 to 90. BenzoTaper counts the 5 mg and 2 mg tablets for those days (and 10 mg, if your prescriber uses them), takes off the tablets you already have, and prints a clear request to bring to your prescriber. Change your taper, and your next request changes with it. Your prescriber decides the final prescription.

The 80/20 Smart-Taper: more time for the last 20%

Research has found that most withdrawal symptoms tend to come near the end of a taper, and published tapering guides advise slowing down there. One says: "When 20% of the dosage remains, begin a 5% dose reduction every 2 to 4 weeks." The 80/20 Smart-Taper does this for you. Once you reach the last 20% of your dose, each Taper Period doubles automatically. Prefer the same pace to the end? Choose Regular Taper instead.

How it works

  1. Section 1 of the sheet: Diazepam (Valium), a current daily dose of 10 mg, the start date, and the choice of 80/20 Smart-Taper or Regular Taper.

    Enter your plan.Type your stable Diazepam dose and your start date. Then choose what you and your prescriber agreed on: how often to reduce (the Taper Period), how much to reduce (0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2 mg), and the 80/20 Smart-Taper or a Regular Taper.

  2. The schedule: the first prescription row, then Days 1 to 5 starting Nov 16, 2026 at 9.5 mg, with the tablets for each day.

Taking a different benzodiazepine or Z-medication?

Switching to Diazepam first, with your prescriber

BenzoTaper tracks Diazepam tapers. Public guides such as the Ashton Manual describe switching to Diazepam before tapering. If you and your prescriber choose to do that, BenzoTaper can show an estimated Diazepam amount for 15 medications:

Yes. BenzoTaper doesn't decide whether to taper or how fast. It tracks the plan you and your prescriber agree on, and helps you bring clear prescription requests to your appointments.

What do I get?

The BenzoTaper file and an illustrated PDF user guide. You download both right after you pay through Stripe.

How do I open it?

Double-click the file. It opens in your web browser, like a web page. Click Save my progress to save a new copy with everything you've entered, and open your newest copy next time.

Does it need the internet?

No. It works offline once it's on your device.

Is my information private?

Yes. There's no account, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Your taper stays in the file on your device.
